The children were in summer camp, and they visited the observation deck late at night with their leader.

Nine children fell from a viewing platform in the northern Czech Republic on Thursday evening, and several of them suffered serious injuries, the CTK news agency reported on Friday.

The accident happened at the viewpoint called Triangl in Markvartice, near Decín. The children were at a summer camp, and they visited the observation deck late at night with their leader.

Two seriously injured children were taken by helicopter to a hospital in Prague and two others in Ústí nad Labem. Four children with moderate injuries are being treated at the hospital in Decín, regional police spokeswoman Veronika Hysplerová said. No information was released on the condition of the ninth child. Prokop Voleník, spokesman for the regional rescue service, confirmed that all the children who crashed were under medical supervision.

The accident is under investigation. The reasons are still unknown. Authorities have not commented. Libor Kunte, the deputy mayor of the settlement, after visiting the site that night, told CTK: it seems that the upper platform of the observation deck was overloaded, and this could be the reason that the floor could not withstand the pressure.

"The upper level of the observation deck was designed for four adults, but at the time of the accident 15 children were there," the mayor wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. According to him, the observation tower is located on the territory of the settlement, but it is operated by a private individual.

The upper level of the Triang lookout, accessible by ladder, is about three to three and a half meters high.
