István B. Hajdú worked as an on-site announcer during the World Championships in Budapest.
"It was a nice task, I'm very happy to have been a part of it. The stadium was our second home in these short two weeks"
- said one of the country's most popular sports commentators on the current channel M1 on Saturday.
As he said, every day from August 19 to 27, they arrived at the National Athletic Center two hours before the start of the program and left there one hour after the end of the competitions.
B. Hajdú said that athletics is a fantastic sport, so the competitions would have been good even if this event had been organized elsewhere, but they would not have had such a good atmosphere. He added that the athletic community had been waiting a lot for such a good atmosphere at the World Cup, since last year there were hardly any spectators in Euguene in the United States, and even fewer in Doha in 2019. Until now, the benchmark was the 2017 World Cup in London, where the spectators understood athletics.
According to his experience, there were many spectators in the arena in Budapest who had never been to an athletic competition before, but quickly fell in love with the sport.
"It was a fantastic World Cup and of a very high standard"
- stated Hajdú B.
Hungarian colors were represented by 57 competitors,
five national records, nine individual records and one bronze medal were achieved.
For the commentator, hammer thrower Bence Halász's bronze medal was the crown of the World Cup, as he "squeezed almost the maximum out of himself".
He pointed out that there are a lot of Hungarian competitors who will have to be watched in two or four years, at the next world championships, or next year at the Paris Olympics, because they will perform even more brightly.
"Everyone put their heart and soul into it, the audience was grateful, and they can draw from this an impulse that can mean successful performances for them in the future as well"
he thought.
