The Hungarian national football team overcame a deficit and won 2-1 as a guest of Serbia in the European Championship qualifying series on Thursday, thereby confirming its leading position in the group and taking a big step towards European Championship participation with the victory.

Although the Serbians took the lead after ten minutes of play with an own goal by Attila Szalai, who was trying to make a save, starting from a bad kick, the Hungarians turned it around with goals from Barnabás Varga and Willi Orbán between the 34th and 36th minutes. Mihály Kata made his debut for the Hungarians in the crested jersey.

With the success in Belgrade, the students of national team captain Marco Rossi pulled three points away from their rivals, and they already have a five-point advantage over third-placed Montenegro at the halfway point. The first two out of the five qualify for next year's continental competition in Germany.

The Hungarians will host the Czechs in a friendly match at the Puskás Arena on Sunday from 18:00, while the European qualifiers will continue at home against the Serbians on October 14.

   The standings of the group:

1. HUNGARY 4 3 1 – 7-1 10 points
