Family members of people suffering from hereditary cancer are continuously screened at the Clinical Center of the University of Pécs (PTE). Those who have cancer in their family and are afraid of inheriting cancer can visit the PTE oncology center from all over the country.

The higher education institution in Baranya indicated in its information: the rate of cancer is increasing at an alarming rate worldwide. Some patients inherit the faulty genes that cause tumors from their family members, i.e

those whose ancestors had a cancer patient are more likely to develop a tumor in their body.

It may indicate hereditary cancer if a type of tumor occurs cumulatively among family members or if a malignant tumor appears at a very young age, or if a person has several separate lesions.

Most often, breast cancer and colon cancer are inherited

– explained Éva Bércesi, the clinical oncologist of the PTE Clinical Center (PTE KK) in the video recording attached to the information.

It is important to monitor those with a history of cancer from their twenties, because

"if you manage to spot the disease in time, it can be cured 100%; today you don't have to die of a malignant tumor"

said the specialist.

Hadjiev Kinga, the head of the Institute of Medical Genetics of the PTE KK, said that ten percent of tumors are hereditary, and the search for potential patients would be simplified if all those who are currently suffering from cancer also participate in genetic tests.

If they can identify a gene defect - which can be associated with an increased risk of cancer - then this can be targeted in healthy family members and thus prevent the development of the disease, the specialist pointed out.
