The crowd of storks feeding behind the mowing tractors is a common phenomenon, but maybe we don't see the multitude of storks gathering in garbage dumps so much.

Regional landfills also play an important role as feeding and roosting places on the route of migrating white storks. In August, several birds choose these locations as a stopover every day to continue their migration the next day. Nothing proves this better than reading the colored rings of birds marked as nestlings, on the basis of which it is possible to track the day-to-day changes in the birds at the landfills.

We also successfully observed ringed birds in the larger colonies of the Nyírség-Szatmár-Bereg landscape in Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and Germany this season.

The crowds of storks gathering at sunset and the sight of mounds of waste growing year after year due to our consumption and waste evoke rather conflicting emotions.

Taking advantage of this abundance of food, in addition to white storks (Ciconia ciconia), other highly protected birds, such as the stork (Himantopus himantopus) or the brown heron (Milvus migrans), are also regular visitors to the area.
