Former President of the Republic László Sólyom, first president of the Constitutional Court, academic, university professor, passed away on Sunday, the secretariat of the former President of the Republic announced.

László Sólyom died "after a long illness which he bore with great strength, activity and serenity".

- says the statement written by Balázs Landi.

The former president of the republic was 81 years old.

László Sólyom was born on January 3, 1942 in Pécs. His mother came from a wealthy industrialist-merchant family, his maternal grandfather owned a spice and colonial goods store. His paternal grandfather was a railway driver at MÁV, who after his retirement worked as a cobbler at home. His wife was a Swabian woman, they had nine children. After graduating as a lawyer in his father's "field", he got a job in financial administration. After the war, he was called a "class stranger" and was fired from his job, so he became an assistant worker in the forestry industry in Mesek, and later a payroll accountant.

In the fifties, the Sólyom family lived in great poverty. He did not train to become a lawyer, at that time he was more interested in music and playing the piano, but he chose law because his parents believed that he would not be able to leave Pécs without support. He did not feel well at the law faculty, he was disappointed by what was taught there.
