The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) constantly monitors the firewood ads appearing in the Facebook Marketplace menu. Based on these, fraudulent advertisers are filtered out, and a list is made of them.
In November, the inspectors detected serious violations of the law in 56 out of 70 advertisements, i.e. in 80 percent of the advertisements, on the basis of which they decided to publish the telephone numbers on a so-called black list, the office's statement reads.
The authority draws attention to the fact that it is extremely risky to order firewood on social media platforms.
Nébih publishes the data of infringing advertisements and the telephone numbers included in them in a searchable form on a so-called "blacklist", i.e. among illegal advertisements.
The office recommends that no one order firewood from the telephone numbers on the list, as the risk of fraud is extremely high.
The unreliability of the firewood ads appearing on the Marketplace is also indicated by the fact that more than half of the advertisers do not provide their phone number, only contacting customers via private message.
It is also a tell-tale sign that if a seller does not provide the data necessary for identification, such as the EUTR technical identification number, name, phone number, or better, location contact. Such advertisers typically try to avoid being overtaken by potentially dissatisfied customers.
During the test purchase by phone, after the inspectors revealed their identity, the fraudsters mostly hung up the phone immediately. In all cases where the seller cooperated with the authority, Nébih's specialists provided the necessary information for the legal posting of advertisements.
The data and phone numbers of those advertisers who filled in the gaps and improved the ads based on the help of the authorities, were not included in the illegal ads.
