The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced the short list of ten Oscar categories on Thursday in Los Angeles. In the field of short animations, Flóra Buda's Anna 27 was also among the productions from which the Oscar nominees will emerge in January.

Flóra Buda's animation Anna 27 won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and was also awarded at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June. The animated short film was produced by the French company Miyu and the Hungarian company Boddah, and its producers are Emmanuel-Alain Raynal and Pierre Baussaron, as well as Gábor Osváth and Benjámin Péter Lukács.

Péter Benjámin Lukács was the sound engineer of the autobiographically inspired work.

27 has now entered the field of 15 productions, from which the Academy of Film and Television Arts will select the Oscar nominees for the category.

The ten categories for which the Oscar contenders have been announced are Documentary, Short Documentary, International Film, Make-up and Hair, Sound, Original Score, Original Song, Animated Short, Short Feature and Visual Effects, reported the Variety.com.

The short list of international films also includes 15 productions, the Hungarian entry, Áron Gauder's animated feature The Four Souls of the Coyote, did not make the list. This year, 88 countries nominated their selected films in the international film category.

The German film The Teacher's Room and the Tokyo-filmed Wim Wenders drama Perfect Days are among the films with a chance for an Oscar nomination.

The list also includes the Finnish Falling Leaves, the Italian Io Capitano, the French The Taste of Passion, the British The Zone of Interest, the Spanish La sociedad de la nieve, and the Ukrainian film 20 Days in Mariupol, which was also included in the short list of documentaries.

Greta Gerwig's Barbie, Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer, Martin Scorsese's Drowned Flowers, Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest and Jorgosz Lanthimosz's Poor Couples were shortlisted in several categories.

Among the 15 composer finalists in the original score Oscar category are John Williams for Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fortune, Ludwig Göransson for Oppenheimer, Mica Levi for the drama The Zone of Interest and Robbie Robertson for the score to Strangled Flowers.

Three of Barbie's theme songs were also included in the shortlist for Best Film Song, which includes two songs from the musical The Color Purple and Flora and Son.

The short list of the documentary field includes, among others, 20 Days of Mariupol, American Symphony, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, The Eternal Memory, A Still Small Voice and Four Daughters will compete with productions for the Oscar nomination.

Oppenheimer was surprisingly left out of the short field of visual effects, but included Zack Snyder's sci-fi Rebel Moon: Part 1 - Child of Fire, Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny, Guardians of the Galaxy: Part 3, Poor Couples and Mission: Impossible: Showdown - Part One as well.

The short list of short films also includes Pedro Almodóvar's Strange Way of Life and Wes Anderson's The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

The shortlists are mostly determined by the industry members of each category.

The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 23.

The 96th Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on March 10, but this time it will start one hour earlier, at 7 p.m. local time. The ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who has accepted the invitation for the fourth time after 2017, 2018 and 2023.
