"Let's try to go deeper and deeper, take positions, gather allies and improve the European Union," the prime minister outlined the plans for the future to the Hungarian nation.
"I have a law degree, I come from the world of professional colleges, where for five years we did nothing but constantly put our own position under investigation. Hungarian politics now has the ability to constantly evaluate its own position. I did this for eight hours, yes, I wondered if I was the one going against the traffic. I had to tell for sure that they were. Every single argument that Hungary has represented and expressed is valid"
Viktor Orbán answered the Hungarian Nation's question as to whether it occurred to him that he was wrong when, at the EU summit a week ago, the leaders of 26 member states convinced him for eight hours about the accession negotiations to be launched with Ukraine.
It is worth noting: the case was finally resolved when the Prime Minister walked out of the room and did not stand in the way of the others approving the Ukrainian request.
Orbán said that this was a bad decision, in which Hungary did not participate, and our conscience is not burdened by it.
"We know that the decision will cause a lot of problems, but from now on we have a legal basis to eliminate these problems if they reach Hungary"
- stated the prime minister, who, however, already vetoed the financial support to be given to Ukraine from the EU budget in mid-December.
"If we give fifty billion euros from the EU budget to Kyiv, it can also mean that we are giving the money of the Hungarians. Since there is not so much money in the Union budget today, it has to be created from somewhere. There are two options for this, one is to take out a loan together. We have had bad experiences with joint borrowing from the Recovery Fund created due to Covid, and we will not go through this again. If, on the other hand, we do not take out a loan, then resources must be reallocated from the existing chapters of the budget, and this may affect Hungarians' money as well. And we do not accept that Hungarians' money is given to Ukraine," said the Prime Minister.
Orbán emphasized: he is not afraid that the Fidesz voters are up to their necks with Brussels, because he is the same way. The only question is what conclusion we draw from the situation.
"My conclusion is that we should try to go deeper, take positions, gather allies and improve the European Union. It's not enough to be poisoned, you have to occupy Brussels!"
Orbán said.
The prime minister said about the deterioration of Hungarian-Ukrainian relations, after thinking over the history of events several times, he does not believe that Hungary bears the responsibility for the low point of neighboring relations.
"The deterioration of the relationship can be expected from the moment when in 2015 the Ukrainians took away from the Hungarians the law that guaranteed the survival of the Hungarian minority as a national community.
Hungarians who were born in Subcarpathia and have always lived there have been deprived of their rights for eight years.
It is a thousand and one hundred year old Hungarian national community, their rights were taken away in 2015, including their cultural rights, the right to raise children in their mother tongue and the broader right to use the language. This is what Ukraine must remedy, the law that was abolished must be restored, the rights that were taken away must be returned, if this is done, then the improvement of the relationship can begin," he stated.
Finally, Orbán was also asked whether it was a magnetic or magical force, or simply fate, that connected them with Ferenc Gyurcsány.
"If it's fate, let it be his fate and not mine"
- said Orbán, who believes that the stakes in the EP elections in 2024 are higher than ever before.
"The European Union has steadily weakened in recent years. It lost ground in the world economy, was unable to gain a foothold in the creation of self-defense capabilities, and proved incapable of handling the conflicts that broke out in its neighborhood in accordance with its own interests. And while this weakening and loss of space continues year after year, the union has also lost the ability to face these problems, to hold introspection and to improve its policies. What causes this? The fact that the bureaucrats in Brussels are not told by the member states or the European people what to do, but by Washington and the Soros empire. This is bad for Europe, it must be changed. Brussels needs to be put in order. The EP elections provide a good opportunity for this," explained the prime minister.
