Ákos Szilágyi would erect a memorial to the victims of the Gyurcsány police terror in 2006. Its purpose is to symbolize the disgrace committed against the Hungarian nation through the tragedy of László Nagy, who was blinded in one eye and died a year ago. The patron of the realization of the statue is the world-famous heart surgeon, Professor Lajos Papp, Magyar Nemzet .
In memory of László Nagy, who was blinded in one eye in the 2006 Gyurcsány police terror attack, and the other victims of the brutal power act, Ákos Szilágyi, who has now started collecting signatures, to make the monument a reality. The creator and organizer of the annual Flag of the Nation event on Andrássy út said that the statue would be erected at the mouth of Dohány utca, where the police shot out the eye of one of the victims with a rubber bullet with animal cruelty and against the rules.
The moment after the shot - as another protester bends down to the victim and takes him in his arms - is a multi-layered symbol: martyrdom, mercy, brotherhood, oppression, desire for freedom and justice, Hungarian destiny. We want to commemorate this moment and this symbol in the form of a human-scale statue on the original site
- said Ákos Szilágyi.
In his view, two things give relevance to the current position. On the one hand, the Hunnia trial involving György Budaházy has recently ended, which, according to Szilágyi, will permanently remove 2006 from the daily public discourse.
- At the same time, since the police terror of 2006, a new generation has grown up, whose members have heard almost nothing about the bloody events. According to those, the perpetrator is a kind, humorous, aging politician uncle. While in 1989, since the regime change, he was the first to raise his hand for his nation
- stressed the originator, who believes that the real facts about 2006 must reach everyone before the upcoming elections, so that informed young people can make a well-considered decision when they vote on our common future in June 2024.
According to his own admission, Ákos Szilágyi was also present at the shooting of László Nagy. – I followed the events from a few meters away at the entrance to Dohány utca. Laci was our friend. Unfortunately, he passed away in December of last year, exactly one year ago. He could no longer bear the difficulties of his life, which had been destroyed to the point of being unlivable - he said, adding,
this group of statues is not about Laci - although it is a worthy memorial to him - but through his tragedy it symbolizes the disgrace committed against our nation.
It is memorable that László Nagy went to a peaceful commemoration on October 23, 2006, when a policeman hit him with a rubber bullet and he immediately lost consciousness.
The bullet was taken out through the roof of the man's palate, he underwent follow-up treatments for five years, and lost the sight in his left eye. He became depressed, had several illnesses, and was disabled. He lost his job, his love, and ended up on the streets. Nine years after the brutal police action in the fall of 2006 that seriously injured hundreds of civilians, 12 of the 14 defendants were acquitted in the trial of the police leaders at the Metropolitan Court, while two were only reprimanded by the military council, which was a humiliating sentence for 43-year-old László Nagy. Nagy said at the time that it was incomprehensible that everyone who was part of that terrible event got away with so much. "It will never be clear who actually fired that shot," said László Nagy later, who
a couple of years ago, he appeared at a public forum of former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, where they wanted to hold the former prime minister to account with several victims of 2006, but Gyurcsány spoke in a humiliating manner about László Nagy in front of the audience of the forum.
Nagy was not the only one who was blinded in the 2006 police terror. Attila Cs. was also blinded by rubber bullets in the fall of 2006, he committed suicide in 2013. We know of a total of 14 eye shots, physical and mental injuries of almost a thousand people, and two hundred serious injuries.
