There is currently no script to prevent this.

Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, is running for the European Parliament elections in June, and if he is elected, he can take his place in the European Parliament in mid-July - which also means that the leading post of the European Council will be vacant.

At the same time, Hungary also takes over the presidency of the Council of the Union in July. However, in the absence of an elected president, the currently presiding country organizes and leads the council's meetings - in this scenario, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

According to Politico's analysis, Michel's move puts enormous pressure on the EU leaders, who want to agree on filling the vacant position - before the Hungarian presidency begins.

According to Politico, the leaders of the other 26 EU member states are desperate to avoid this scenario, including support for Hungary and disputes between them, such as Ukraine.

After June 6–9 Parliamentary elections will be held in all 27 EU countries between June 17 and June 27-28.

At these two meetings, the member states have the opportunity to agree on Charles Michel's successor, taking into account the election results and the compromises between the member states.

During his announcement, Michel did not wish to specify whether he was interested in other leading positions in addition to the parliamentary seat.

For example, to be the leading candidate of the European liberals, the bloc's third largest political camp, for the position of president of the European Commission, or to have more influence as the EU commissioner of Belgium.
