The person who vandalized the statue of the Virgin in Dunavecs was taken into custody. A man from Dunavecs who was arrested in his home is suspected of vandalism, the Bács-Kiskun County Police Headquarters announced on police.hu on Friday.
According to the information, the man damaged the statue of the Virgin of Medjugorje at one of the town's roundabouts. He hit the work on the head several times, causing the statue's head to break off.
An investigative team was formed to apprehend the perpetrator. In the footage from the surveillance cameras, the investigators saw that the vandalism was committed by a man, and in addition to his body shape, they also determined his approximate height. The police then checked all the camera recordings of the settlement. The videos of the man were also watched by the employees of the Kunszentmiklós Police Department and the town's civil guards, to see if they could find a clue based on this minimal information.
Based on the suggestion of a Kunszentmiklós police officer, the authorities went to a family in Dunavecs, and it turned out that the man living there was suspected of the vandalism on December 31. The suspect was taken into custody and his arrest initiated.
In connection with the case, the Bács-Kiskun County Prosecutor's Office informed MTI on Friday that the Kunszentmiklós District Prosecutor's Office is proposing the arrest of the Romanian perpetrator for vandalism by destroying an object of religious respect.
According to the information of the General Prosecutor's Office, the man had already damaged the statue of the Virgin Mary erected by the local Roman Catholic Church at the roundabout on highway 513 in the early hours of May 19 last year, breaking off the part from the head to the chest and the left arm. After the religious work was restored, the man smashed its head again with an unknown object at dawn on New Year's Eve.
The prosecutor's office proposes the arrest of the vandal with foreign family ties and a criminal record due to the risk of escaping and hiding, as well as in order to prevent repetition of the crime and unlawful influence of the proceedings. The investigative judge will decide on the coercive measure on Friday, they said in the announcement.
