The Dutch population considers the rights granted to transgender and non-binary people less and less acceptable, since 2021 the number of people who have a positive attitude towards gender reassignment surgery has decreased by about ten percent.
All of this was reported by the English-language Dutch news portal NL Times on Sunday, citing data from the Dutch Central Statistics Office (CBS).
A clear majority of the Dutch oppose the proposed law that would allow transgender people to indicate their changed gender in their passports from the age of 16. About a quarter of those surveyed agreed with the relevant measure awaiting a parliamentary vote.
The news portal quoted political scientist Anne Louise Schotel as confirming the increase in opposition to transgender people in the Netherlands. The sight of trans people often causes aversion, he said.
The more someone deviates from the norm, i.e. in this case neither male nor female, the more people fear them
he added. Freya Terpstra, from the Dutch NGO Transgender Network, expressed concern about the growing intolerance and drew attention to the increase in the number of "hate messages" sent to transgender people in the Netherlands.
According to a study conducted in the fall of 2023 by the Dutch weekly De Groene Amsterdammer, the number of anti-trans online posts increased by 67 percent compared to the previous year, they added.
