The current president of the Constitutional Court is nominated as president of the republic by the governing parties.

The news was announced by Fidesz faction leader Máté Kocsis on Thursday in Balatonalmádi, at a press conference reporting on the two-day Fidesz-KDNP faction meeting.

The President of the Constitutional Court is a serious, highly respected person who has completed a career as a lawyer. Group leader Máté Kocsis believes that there are several people in the country whose name could come up, but they think Tamás Sulyok is the most suitable.

Tamás Sulyok obtained his law degree in 1980 at the Faculty of State and Law of the József Attila University of Szeged.

He began his career as a court draftsman at the Csongrád County Court. In 1982, he passed his professional legal examination, and then worked as a legal advisor until 1991. Between 1991 and 1996, he worked as a lawyer at Sulyok–Japport, and from 1997 at the Sulyok and Ádám Law Office. Between 1998 and 2002, he provided the legal representation of the Szeged municipality.

He was a lawyer until he was elected constitutional judge. Between 2000 and 2014, he was Austrian Honorary Consul.

In 2004, he obtained a qualification as a specialist lawyer in European law at the ELTE ÁJK Legal Continuing Education Institute. Since September 2005, as an invited lecturer, he has been teaching constitutional law, holding a seminar and an optional college at the Faculty of Law of the University of Szeged. In 2013, he obtained a PhD degree at the University of Szeged.

The Parliament elected Tamás Sulyok as a member of the Constitutional Court from September 27, 2014. 2015. on March 30, with effect from April 1, the full session of the Constitutional Court elected him as the board's deputy president. From April 22, 2016 - as the successor of Barnabás Lenkovics - he performed the powers of the president as deputy president.

In November 2016, the Press Office of the Parliament announced that Speaker László Kövér nominated him as the President of the Constitutional Court for the full session of the Constitutional Court to be held on November 22, 2016. The National Assembly elected him to the position at the meeting.

On November 22, 2016, the Parliament elected Tamás Sulyok as the President of the Constitutional Court.

His research topics: the constitutional position of the legal profession in Hungary, the regulation of the internal market of the European Community and the relationships between lawyer services.

Tamás Sulyok has two adult children.
