The NATO Secretary General welcomed the decision.
The Parliament accepted the resignation of the President of the Republic Katalin Novák on Monday. The representatives made the decision with 196 yes votes, no dissenting votes and no abstentions.
Katalin Novák submitted her resignation to the parliament dated February 11.
Until the new President of the Republic takes office, the duties and powers of the Head of State will be exercised by László Kövér, the President of the Parliament.
As long as László Kövér performs the tasks and powers of the head of state, based on the decision of the parliament, the vice-president Sándor Lezsák of Fidesz will hold the post of speaker of the house.
The Parliament contributed to Sweden's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
With 188 yes votes and 6 no votes, the representatives approved the law on the promulgation of the accession protocol without abstention.
After the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2022, the northern European state (together with Finland), which has been neutral until now, requested to join the military alliance. Sweden becomes a member when it deposits its instrument of accession with the government of the United States of America.
In his message published on X, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed that the Parliament approved Sweden's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Monday.
The Secretary General announced: now that all allied countries have approved Sweden's accession, the Scandinavian country will become NATO's 32nd member.
With Sweden's membership, we will become stronger and safer - Stoltenberg concluded his message.
