The Latin American state is going against the anti-life trends. In Peru, a bill was passed to protect pregnant women and their unborn children, which applies to all stages of pregnancy: the law states that the life of the mother and the child are of equal importance. The bill comes after Peru amended its constitution in 2023, recognizing that human life begins at conception.
Peru's parliament has adopted a new bill to protect pregnant mothers and their unborn children, reports Mandiner based on Catholic News Agency . According to the new draft legislation, the life of the mother and her child are now of equal importance, both persons are entitled to the same protection during pregnancy, and the pending law also guarantees the protection of their environment.
According to the Catholic News Agency, the bill easily passed the Peruvian Congress with 87 votes to 18, with 7 abstentions. The new legislation is currently on the desk of President Dina Boluarte, who is expected to sign it.
Article 2 of the legislation stipulates that both the state and society, especially health workers, are obliged to provide special protection during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, and this protection extends to all legal entities, i.e. mother and child equally he deserves it.
One of the most important provisions of the law is the recognition of the right of babies to be "born in a healthy, decent and safe environment".
In addition, the father's right is recognized in everything.
According to experts, the new law in practice supports public policies that guarantee comprehensive health care for both the mother and the unborn child, including prenatal screenings, maternal nutrition, preparation for childbirth and postpartum care, provision of rest after childbirth , but also family counseling and therapy, as well as support for families, if necessary.
"Based on this law, no entity can use the penal code as an excuse to claim the right to 'therapeutic abortion' in Peru," said Carlos Polo, director of the Latin American office of the Population Research Institute, after the parliamentary decision.
The law passed by a large majority is already on the table of President Dina Boluarte, and as soon as the country's president signs it, it can become effective.
The decision in Peru is a huge step in the realization of fetal rights, especially nowadays, when some nations are forcing the right to abortion into their constitutions, writes vasarnap.hu .
