"A priceless national treasure for sale for the price of a family home"

– with this text, someone shared the post in which the family house of one of the greatest Hungarian writers, Péter Esterházy, who died in 2016, was advertised for sale. the ingatlan.com website, III. district property is sold for HUF 350 million. The son of the Kossuth Prize-winning writer, Marcell Esterházy, shared this text on Facebook .

After more than 65 years, the family house of the Esterházy family in Rómaifürdő is for sale.

The post was shared by several people. The comment factory and brainstorming started on how to keep the family home and make it a public property. According to some opinions, the property could be used as a museum, others as a creative house or a translation house.

It is of literary historical importance

Writer György Dragomán also shared the post on social media. He quotes the most beautiful part of the ad.

»for many, many years it was the home of a happy extended family«, says this real estate advertisement of literary historical significance. From EP's books you can tell quite precisely how this was the case. I've only been there once in my life, on a birthday, it was an unforgettably beautiful occasion. What reminds me of this ad is that when Thomas Mann's villa in Los Angeles was advertised in 2016, there was no indication of who owned the house. But then the entire German cultural and political life came together, and the villa is now a creative house.

György Dragomán's post is very popular, many people commented and even more people shared it. Among the contributors is Miklós Vámos, according to whose wording, "We should do something like this now."

András Visky, who was recently awarded the Kossuth Prize, captioned the post:

Let's buy it for the Szépíros. I'll get in with a thousand.

Visky's suggestion is supported by several people.

In the ad, among other things, it is written that

"thanks to the location and features of the property, it is also an excellent opportunity for real estate developers, it can be converted, expanded, and even a 4-apartment apartment building can be built on it. The neighborhood is peaceful and safe, and there are many shopping and leisure opportunities nearby, which is for the convenience of the residents."

Politics also came into play

Mayor candidate Dávid Vitézy, former state secretary responsible for transport, wrote on Facebook

"Esterházy's legacy has now gone to Berlin, but Budapest has not forgotten him for a minute. But now, if we don't act in time, we will lose his home forever. Therefore, joining György Dragomán's proposal, I initiate that the Hungarian State and the Capital City Municipality jointly place Péter Esterházy's house under protection and purchase it, thus protecting one of the most important sites of our cultural heritage.

I believe that we can rise above political fault lines on this issue, so I ask the Minister of Culture János Csák and Mayor Gergely Karácsony to save this house for posterity together. A hundred years from now, no one will care who was the minister or mayor in 2024, but Péter Esterházy will still be read."
