Ilaria Salis wanted to return home to her parents, under house arrest.
The trial of Italian far-left activist Ilaria Salis continued at the Metropolitan Court. The main defendant in the criminal case that started after the violent crimes in Budapest has a criminal record, committed minor crimes more than ten years ago, and received a suspended prison sentence. His lawyer asked the court for house arrest so that he can continue to work in a home office.
Ilaria Salis previously offered to either be transferred to an Italian prison or sent under house arrest to her parents. And his request yesterday was about ending his arrest.
The suspect's lawyer said that he would make a motion to set a bail of HUF 16 million in the event that the termination of the coercive measure is not possible without bail. Ilaria Salis' defense attorney also pointed out that her client's circumstances are also settled in Hungary, she has a place to live and stay, she could work from home, and her host could also take care of her daily shopping.
The defense also argued that there is no crime in the indictment that would have directly led to a life-threatening condition.
However, the court rejected Ilaria Salisé's request. According to the reasoning of the sentencing judge, 13 months (that's how long he has been in custody) cannot be said to be excessive in the case of a crime of this gravity. In the last two months, his personal conditions in prison have indeed improved, but the court cannot go beyond what the indictment contains.
Among other things, the court took into account the principles of necessity and proportionality and the fact that the accused was not confronted with the law for the first time, as he was before the court four times between 2014 and 2019.
In addition, due to the unscrupulous manner in which the acts in Budapest were committed, as well as the risk of escape and hiding, he considers the maintenance of pre-trial detention to be justified against the contents of the defendant's request.
The defense and the accused appealed. The hearing of the third-rate accused will finally take place on May 24 at nine o'clock.
It is memorable that in February of last year, the activists of the international extreme left, Antifa, literally went on a manhunt on the streets of Budapest. The first incident took place on February 9 in Fővám Square in the city center, where three Polish citizens were attacked by a gang of seven or eight people: they ran over them and then started hitting them with vipers and other tools. Two of the victims also suffered serious fractures that took more than eight days to heal.
The next attack took place the next day, on February 10, when the XI. in Gazdagrét district, a Hungarian man was attacked from behind. The victim, who was trying to work, suffered such serious injuries that he had to be taken to hospital immediately.
On the same day, in the evening hours, a Hungarian couple was assaulted in Bank Street in District V, and a German couple in District I. Not long after, it turned out that this brutal, showdown-like action was part of a more serious series of attacks, which members of the far-left movement in Western Europe, the Antifa, committed for several days on the streets of Budapest, in response to the 1945 break out of the castle by Hungarian and German troops. against memorialists and passers-by.
Their aim was to abuse the chosen victims with various means capable of taking life.
So that the humiliation felt due to the circumstances of the serious, life-threatening injuries and the unexpected attacks causes mental anguish to the victims, which sends a deterrent message to the representatives of the extreme right-wing movements. The prosecutor's office recommended that the three far-left activists arrested in Hungary be sentenced to prison and deported from the territory of Hungary.
