Marosvásárhely, who died at the age of one hundred and two, was the only survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp.

Hope, courage, serene and endless love, this is what I always felt in the company of Zsuzsa Diamantstein every time I met her, writes Zoltán Soós, mayor of Marosvásárhely, in his Facebook post.

Zsuzsa Diamantstein was born on June 17, 1922, and was one of the 3,149 people deported from the old ghetto on June 4, 1944.

He recalled that when they arrived at Auschwitz, they were all stripped naked and their shoes were taken away. He spent three nights in Auschwitz, and then, together with his mother and an aunt named Ágnes, they were taken to Kraków-Plaszow. His mother was then taken to work in the construction industry, and he worked in a warehouse and then in a tailor shop. Soon, in August 1944, he was taken to Auschwitz again, then his mother was already in the gas chamber.

After spending a month in Auschwitz, Zsuzsát Diamantstein was sent to the labor camp, from which he was released on May 9, 1945, together with 10 other Jews from Erge, and then returned to Marosvásárhely.

Eight years ago, President Klaus Iohannis awarded Zsuzsa Diamantstein the Knight's Cross of the National Order of Merit.
