The Hungarian National Museum, which won a tender for the renovation of the Esztergom Castle Museum and the Esterházy Castle in Zzelíz, can spend more than two million euros on tourism development.

The Hungarian National Museum and the Esterházy Castle in Zzelíz jointly won the tender of the INTERREG Slovakia-Hungary program, the European Development Fund will support the implementation of the project with more than one and a half million euros out of the almost two million euros, the National Museum told MTI.

The main goal of the project is the development of the castle museum in Esztergom, the reconstruction of its dilapidated castle wall with professional insulation and drainage solutions, and the opening of the Studiolo, decorated with frescoes called Virtues, believed to be painted by Botticelli, to visitors.

The result of the complex development will be the creation of a new, one-hour tour covering the castle's 16 rooms with the latest elements using 3D and virtual content. The value of the development will be almost one million euros.

Another part of the project is the continuation of the renovation of the Esterházy castle in Zzelíz, thanks to which the premises can now function as a full-fledged cultural and educational center. The south-eastern part of the castle can also be renovated with the support, the planned total cost of which is EUR 950,000.

640,000 euros from the tender can be used for the renovation, so the partners decided on a broader cooperation within the framework of the project, so the Catholic Church, which operates the St. James Church, will also participate in the implementation as a partner.

Part of the cooperation is that the Hungarian National Museum provides training to the specialists responsible for the services to be created in the Zzelíz Castle during the implementation of the project.

The archeological excavation of St. James Church and its opening to the public will be carried out by specialists from the National Museum and non-budgeted partner organizations.

The municipality of Zselíz will transfer its experience and knowledge acquired during the organization of Norwegian Fund project events to the museum during the implementation of the project. The experts of the project are confident that the continuous mutual knowledge sharing and cultural exchange program will ensure the long-term maintenance of the buildings.

This is not the first time that the Hungarian National Museum and the Zselíz municipality are bidding together. The current collaboration was preceded by the CoME, where the castle won and successfully implemented tourism development together with another member institution of the National Museum, the Bálint Balassa Museum.
