Dejan Sztankovics is leaving the post of head coach of the Hungarian champion and Hungarian Cup silver medalist Ferencváros football team and will continue with the Russian Spartak Moscow.

As first reported by M4 Sport , the Serbian manager informed the club's management one day after the MK final loss against Paks that he had accepted the offer of another team and was leaving. Spartak Moscow announced the signing of Stankovics on its social media platforms on Thursday.

Club president Gábor Kubatov previously said that the contract of the Serbian professional has a buyout clause, which is four months' salary, and the Russian club could now activate it.

In a statement on fradi.hu, Ferencváros wrote that "the foreign staff that came with him" is leaving with Sztankovic, and the FTC is "prepared for the situation".

"The FTC was not surprised by the specialist's decision. In this weekend's derby, which is also the championship's gold medal ceremony, Leandro de Almeida will sit on Fradi's bench," they wrote.

On September 4 of last year, the 45-year-old Stankovic replaced the appointed Csaba Máté on the bench of the green and whites as the successor of Stanislav Cherchesov. Under his leadership, the team won the league title and marched undefeated in the group stage of the Conference League to the playoffs, where they were eliminated by the later finalists Olimpiakosz.

FTC lost 2-0 to Paks in the final of the MOL Hungarian Cup after extra time on Tuesday night, while OTP Bank Liga has one match left: the season-ending derby against eternal rival Újpest on Sunday.

Stankovic previously worked as a coach at Crvena zvezda and the Italian club Sampdoria. As a player, he won the Champions League and Club World Cup with Internazionale in 2010, and the European Cup Winners' Cup (CUP) and European Super Cup with Lazio in 1999. Between 1998 and 2013, he appeared 103 times in the national teams of Yugoslavia, Serbia-Montenegro and Serbia, scoring 15 goals. He started his coaching career in 2014, and his biggest international success was that in the 2020/21 competition, he advanced to the Europa League from the group stage with Crvena zvezda and was eliminated in the round of 32. Prior to the FTC, he managed Sampdoria, which were relegated from the top flight.
