This year too, June 4th is commemorated with a bonfire and ringing of bells.
Next Sunday, June 2, the flag parade will be held for the sixth time in Budapest, during which a 1,848-meter-long national flag will be carried along Andrássy út to Hősök tere. As per the invitation
the organizers want to wave the Hungarian flag in front of the world as a last reminder, a few days before the anniversary of the Trianon decree that sealed the dismemberment of Hungary, as well as the local government and European Parliament elections, warning everyone involved to make the right decision.
In their recruiter, they emphasized that this year the red-white-green flag will be followed by a 400-meter Székely flag. "This flag, representing our Hungarianness abroad, surrounds our national cockade on the Heroes' Square. We are waiting for applications from our Hungarians from the Uplands, Subcarpathians, Transylvania, Southern Region and Őrvidék to accompany and carry the 400-meter flag representing them," reads the invitation. The event, which has become a tradition by now, starts at two o'clock in the afternoon from the Opera building.
In addition to the flag march, the 56 Lángja Foundation holds two more commemorations on the day of national unity: on June 4, at 4:32 p.m., the peace bell of unity will ring, and at 8:24 p.m., the fire of our unity will be lit in Hősök square.
"The fire-lighting that has been going on since 2020 calls on the Hungarians of the world to light watch fires at the same time, we, on behalf of the people of Budapest, intend to light a fire on Hősök Square. This fire made of red-white-green flames appears in the form of a phenomenon never seen before"
- reads the announcement, in which they add that the border line of Hungary before the Trianon Dictator will also be laid out on the square with red-white-green torches.
In 2010, the Hungarian Parliament declared June 4, the day of the Trianon Peace Treaty, as the day of national unity. By adopting the bill submitted by the national government, the Parliament declared:
all members and communities of Hungarians under the authority of several states are part of the unified Hungarian nation, whose unity across state borders is a reality and at the same time a defining element of Hungarians' personal and community identity.
The motion was not supported by the MSZP on the grounds that it "deteriorates Hungary's good neighborly relations and does not serve the interests of Hungarians across the border".
