The Hungarian Bar Association was shocked that a political party called the President of the Republic a "criminal under common law" and "servant of the land mafia" because of his previous work as a lawyer.
In its statement on Monday, the Chamber wrote that it is a cause for deep concern that, in the heat of political battles, accusations are made by political actors that seriously damage not only the public trust in the presidential institution of the Republic, but also in the legal profession.
The announcement highlights: despite the serious words spoken in the political arena, the "undisputed conviction" of the Hungarian Bar Association is that Tamás Sulyok performed his legal profession with great public respect;
in addition, during his activities as an academic and constitutional judge, he always stood up for the independence of lawyers and chambers, which he considered to be the cornerstone of the rule of law and public trust, and for which the Hungarian Bar Association would like to express its special thanks.
"This public trust has now been attacked with the harsh statements already quoted," the communique highlights.
Based on the applicable law, the Chamber will act in all cases against colleagues who violate the law on legal practice or the ethical rules governing lawyers. It will act with the same determination against attacks on lawyers because of their legal activities or, as in the present case, during their public activities - unjustly - because it considers the protection of public trust in the legal profession to be its fundamental task, the Hungarian Bar Association announced in the announcement.
