Europe must protect national minorities and freedom of religious practice, as national communities are in a difficult situation in many places and traditional Christian values are under attack, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated in Strasbourg, speaking to MTI on Monday.

Péter Szijjártó announced before Monday's session of the summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe: traditional values that belong to Christianity are under attack in Europe, even though Europe was strong when it adhered to Christian values.

He stated: the effort dictated by the strong liberal mainstream wants Europe to forget Christian values as much as possible. He called it unfortunate that the effort is associated with serious anti-Semitism in Western Europe.

This is shown by the fact that after a terrorist organization attacked Israel and the Middle Eastern country defended itself, openly anti-Semitic demonstrations broke out in Western European capitals, he said. He also pointed out that, in addition to the mentioned aspiration, national minorities and communities were in a difficult situation in many places due to regulations adopted in several countries, as a result of which their rights were curtailed.

In Europe, it is necessary to act against the trend, he said. The best forum for all this is the Strasbourg-based Council of Europe, during its six-month Hungarian presidency that began at the end of May, Hungary will move everything in order to ensure freedom of religious practice and respect for the rights of national minorities, Péter Szijjártó added.
