They tried to blackmail the family of former Formula 1 racing driver Michael Schumacher with millions of euros, two people were detained in the case, announced the spokesman of the Wuppertal prosecutor's office in West Germany on Monday.

The perpetrators claimed to employees of the family that they were in possession of embarrassing information for the Schumacher family and demanded millions of euros not to disclose the information.

According to the prosecutor's spokesman, the blackmailers even sent some files to the family as evidence.

The investigators managed to find out that the blackmailers started the operation from Wuppertal. They were also detained last Saturday, a 53-year-old and a 30-year-old man, father and son. Both are on probation for another crime.

In 2013, Schumacher suffered a skiing accident with a serious head injury, which ended his career, and since then he has not appeared in public, and very little is known about his health.

The family has been the target of extortion before,

in 2017, the Reutlingen court also sentenced a then 25-year-old man who tried to extort money from Schumacher's wife.
