The government decided on the matter in a resolution.
According to the decision signed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the government decided to grant the title of Athlete of the Nation based on the proposal of the Athletes of the Nation.
Based on Section 62 (1) of Act I of 2004 on sports, the government grants the title of Sportsman of the Nation to the swimmer Dr. Sándor Wladár and the accompanying life annuity. With the death of sports shooter László Hammerl on May 3rd, one of the twelve places became vacant in his exclusive company.
A member of the board can be someone who has reached the age of 60, has achieved outstanding results as an athlete, and has played an important role in the domestic sports scene even after his career as a competitor.
Sándor Wladár won the Olympic title in 1980, world championship silver medalist and two-time European champion, and in 1986 he won the Hungarian championship as a water polo player. He has been the president of the Hungarian Swimming Association since 2017.
