This year, around ten thousand families could find themselves in a difficult situation due to the expiration of the babysitting program, which is why the government is extending the deadline until July 1, 2026, said the Minister of Culture and Innovation at a press conference in Budapest on Tuesday.

Balázs Hankó announced the measure announced on Monday: following a discussion with family organizations last week, it was decided that the repayment deadline for those participating in the babysitting program between July 1, 2019 and July 1, 2021 will be uniformly extended.

"Hungary is a family-friendly country, our goal cannot be other than to bring the desired child to every family," the minister emphasized, adding that since 2010, thirty measures amounting to HUF 3,300 billion a year help, strengthen families and support childbearing.

The babysitting program, which started on July 1, 2019, has helped 245,000 families so far, and 211,000 children were born, among other things, thanks to this program

Balázs Hankó continued.

At the same time, he pointed out that the past years were "troubled times" - Covid epidemic, war, "misguided sanctions policy" - and together with family organizations, they saw that the expiration of the deadline could be a problem for more than five hundred families in July and ten thousand this year.

Nóra Király, the founder of the Young Families Club, thanked the government for continuing to stand by the families and listening to the requests of the family organizations, as the reliable baby-sitters would have encountered serious difficulties when the deadline expired.

In the past fourteen years, a very good relationship has developed between the government and family organizations, communication is continuous; at last week's consultation, it was brought up that many people took out the ten million HUF baby loan, but not everyone dared to "take on the children" in recent difficult years, Nóra Király added.

He noted that, according to research, young people want many children, which is why this measure is important.

Balázs Hankó also announced that the government will grant an additional HUF 1.3 billion to the Szent-Györgyi Albert Clinical Center of the University of Szeged in order to provide the best possible health care for children, so that, in addition to pediatric surgery, the development of operating rooms related to pediatric traumatology will be implemented.

By supplementing the existing two billion forints, it will be possible to create an operating theater suitable for the highest level of pediatric trauma care in the Southern Great Plain region within a year, according to the plans, the minister announced.
