The sale of the iconic Hungarian sweet will be discontinued, and the favorite chocolate of many will disappear.
The news was published by the manufacturer of the Sport slice, but the people of the Internet did not leave the decision unspoken.
Although nowadays everyone focuses on the country's cake on the celebration of the founding of the state on August 20, it is not the only sweet that can be associated with the holiday father. Because in 1953, the Sport slice was also born on this important day. True, not on the occasion of Hungary's birthday, but for the opening of the Népstadion.
The first chocolates were produced in 25-gram packages, referred to today as small Sport bars, using artisan techniques.
Even then, its packaging consisted of the well-known aluminum foil and green paper, but originally it featured a figure of a discus thrower modeled after the Hungarian Olympian József Szécsényi.
It was marketed under the name MHK Sport slice, and after the 1956 revolution, production continued under the name MHSZ Sport slice.
Then came the system change, and in 1993 the Kraft Jacobs Suchard company bought the production company. The size of the Sport bar increased to 31 grams, and the original product was referred to as the small Sport bar. Not long after, the 42-gram Sport bar XL also appeared, and in recent years, the product range has been expanded with many other specialties - from parlor sugar to ice cream.
The packaging has also changed, at least as far as the discus thrower is concerned, because the figure of the athlete has been removed from the green paper of the larger slices. The slogan was also changed, as was the Jamaican guy, who was also replaced by a new advertising face. But many people also remember the red Porchés advertisement.
The original Sport bar has been available for more than 70 years, but it no longer celebrates its 71st birthday: the manufacturer made the decision to discontinue the classic, small-sized Sport bar due to the unsustainability of the packaging.
Chocolate evokes pleasant memories and good experiences for both the elderly and the young. So it's no wonder that a lot of people reacted to the news published on Facebook in the comments.
Many people look at the iconic Hungarian sweet, the favorite delicacy of their childhood, with nostalgia. For those times when the Sport slice only cost HUF 1-2.
There are also those who do not understand why it is not enough to change the packaging so that the classic 25 gram slice can still be sold in an environmentally friendly material.
Still others, and they are the majority, write that this Sport bar is no longer the Sport bar they loved as a child.
Although the rum-chocolate aroma remains, over the years the taste of the candy has changed a lot compared to the original. We can only speculate as to what might be behind this, but the technological development of production may have something to do with it.
