For a good marriage, you have to work every day, it's much easier if the couple share similar values. On the other hand, possible reasons for being single include excessive expectations of the other person and career building.

Hungarians are pro-marriage and support the traditional family model, according to the research of the Mária Kopp Institute for Population and Families (KINCS).

KINCS wrote: according to a telephone survey of 1,000 people conducted on the occasion of the Marriage Week program series between January 11 and 20, 82 percent of Hungarians believe that marriage is a cohabitation between a man and a woman based on a voluntary decision. 97 percent of the respondents believe that for a good marriage you have to work every day, 83 percent of the respondents are of the opinion that it is much easier if the couple shares similar values, they added.

A child completes a marriage

Almost three-quarters of them, 73 percent, believe that marriage provides emotional security for spouses, six out of ten respondents believe that children complete a marriage, and the same number believe that marriage increases the feeling of happiness.

The research also reveals that, according to Hungarians, the basis of a well-functioning marriage and relationship is mutual acceptance, respect, proper communication, "quality time" spent together, affection, the ability to compromise, love, a sense of humor, and shared values. and the division of labor between married couples, they noted.

Every second person thinks that marriage is a life-long union, and two-thirds of married people agreed with this.

KINCS pointed out that according to half of the people, it is better for the couple to get married before having children, with older people mostly agreeing with this.

They elaborated: 60 percent of the respondents mentioned the lack of real social relationships, excessive expectations of the other person, lack of a secure financial background, and career building among the main obstacles to choosing a partner and the possible reasons for being single.

Today, almost three-quarters of children born in Hungary have married parents, a decade ago the same indicator was around 50 percent, they explained.

We are experiencing a "renaissance" of marriages, which is well proven by the fact that the last time before the regime change, more marriages were concluded in Hungary than in recent years, as the number of marriages has exceeded 64,000 every year since 2019, reads the announcement of KINCS.

Hungarian family allowances are a solid foundation for marriage and childbearing

Hungarian family allowances are a reliable basis for marriage and childbearing, and the government provides all the help to young people who are about to start a family, wrote the Secretary of State responsible for families of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation (KIM) on his Facebook page on the occasion of the start of Marriage Week.

Ágnes Hornung wrote that marriage is a value, which, according to numerous studies, means a more lasting relationship and results in the birth of more children.

In the post, the state secretary also shared the ministry's statement uploaded to the kormany.hu website, in which it was emphasized that the success of the future depends on the success of families, therefore the government continues to strive to ensure that neither marriage nor childbearing is limited by financial difficulties.

Even in the difficult economic situation, the government gives special support to couples in deciding to marry and have children: first-time couples can use a tax discount for two years, and after the birth of a child a family tax discount, and in the case of mothers under the age of 30, on top of that, now they are entitled to a personal income tax exemption, and they can also take advantage of, among other things, the baby support and the family home creation discount (csoc), they listed in the announcement.

It was announced that the Hungarian family support system is stable, multi-layered, targeted and flexible, which protects and serves families in many ways, and this is also the reason why the institution of marriage has strengthened in Hungary in the recent period. At the European level, the number of marriages has increased the most in Hungary: while in 2010, barely 36,000 couples got married, in 2022 this number has already reached 64,000, which is an increase of more than 80 percent. At the same time, between 2010 and 2021, the number of divorces decreased from 24,000 to around 18,000 per year, which means a reduction of more than 24 percent.
