The measure mostly applies to members of minority groups from France's former colonies.
The French authorities have introduced special security rules for the duration of the Olympics, reports based on a Euronews article . According to the portal, they use the discretion to keep away from the Olympics those who may pose a potential security threat, citing the anti-terror law. In practice, this means that
they cannot leave their immediate surroundings and must report to the police daily.
The measure mostly applies to members of minority groups from France's former colonies.
The 21-year-old bank trainee, Amine, born in France, is among those affected. He cannot leave the suburbs of southern Paris, even though he has no criminal record.
"These restrictions will last for three months. A month has already passed, so it will end on September 29, two months from now. Honestly, these restrictions are affecting my mental health. It is very difficult to experience this on a daily basis. Unfortunately, I won't be able to see my family during this time either," says Amine.
The portal points out that Amine was noticed by the authorities when, in a Tiktok video last October, wearing a Palestinian sports club jersey, he made obscene gestures towards the Eiffel Tower, which was illuminated in Israeli colors after the October 7 terrorist attack.
At the same time, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin emphasized that the measure is not directed against minorities. The minister argued that "extremist people on the left or the right are watched in the same way."
