In a letter, EU Commissioner Thierry Breton called on Musk to comply with EU legislation.

Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly known as Twitter), will conduct an interview with US presidential candidate Donald Trump on Tuesday night European time, which will be broadcast live on X.

In connection with the interview, the European Union (EU) also spoke, emphasizing the responsibility of online platforms in the fight against illegal content and disinformation.

In a public post, EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton warned Musk of his obligations under EU law. Breton specifically emphasized that platforms with large audiences, such as X, have a particularly high responsibility in controlling online content. In his letter, he reminded Musk that

X has a legal obligation to ensure compliance with EU legislation, in particular in accordance with the provisions of the EU Digital Services Act (DSA).

Under the DSA, Internet companies must effectively monitor online content to protect users from harmful information. Breton emphasized that X must ensure freedom of expression and information, but at the same time take decisive action against the spread of harmful content that may have a negative impact on civil discourse and public safety.

Breton also drew attention to the fact that any negative effects that occur due to inadequate regulation of the platform will be relevant to the EU investigation against X.

"EU services will be extremely alert to any evidence of a breach of the DSA, and we will not hesitate to use our full range of tools where justified to protect EU citizens from serious harm," Breton concluded in his letter.

"To be honest, I really wanted to respond with this Tropic Thunder meme, but I would never do something so rude and irresponsible!" Elon Musk wrote in his X post.

The shared meme reads:

Take a big step back and literally fuck yourself in the face! reads the strong message.
