The Minister of the Interior said that the new law to be drafted would reduce the blade size of knives that can be legally held in public areas from 12 to 6 centimeters.

Crimes committed with a knife must be curbed with legal strictures, the German Minister of the Interior said in an interview with the Sunday edition of the newspaper Bild.

Nancy Faeser reacted to the fact that, according to data from the German Federal Police, the 380 knife attacks registered at train stations in the first half of the year show an increase compared to last year's 650 such attacks recorded during the entire year. The number of violent acts committed with knives on moving trains was 196 in 2023, and 84 in the first half of this year. The Minister of the Interior said that

the new law to be drafted would reduce the blade size of knives that can be legally held in public from 12 to 6 centimeters, and the wearing and use of knives with spring-loaded and retractable blades would be completely prohibited.

Although in Germany the transport law currently in force already prohibits the transport of objects and materials dangerous to passengers on public transport, the interior ministers of the 16 German states recently asked the minister of the interior to standardize the regulations at the national level with a new law.
