No matter what the EU bureaucracy does, the Hungarian government will remain adamant and will always stand by the reduction of prices and Hungarian families.

SPAR, with Brussels on its side, launched another political attack on Hungary and Hungarian families when it repeatedly attacked the Hungarian special tax on retail sales. With this, he again objects to a measure that the Court of Justice of the European Union already declared in 2020 to be in line with European Union standards, the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) announced on Thursday after the European Commission decided to file a lawsuit against Hungary at the Court of Justice of the European Union , because in his opinion the law on the protection of national sovereignty violates EU law.

This measure has already been attacked once, we defended it then, and we will defend it now as well, says the statement of the ministry.

The NGM reminded: in a previous ruling, the EU Court pointed out that member states are free to define the taxation system they deem most appropriate and to apply progressive taxation with regard to sales revenue.

In addition, the Court also emphasized that since all businesses operating in the relevant sector in Hungary are considered subject to the contested tax, and since the tax rates applicable to the different ranges of sales revenue are valid for all of these businesses, the Hungarian regulations introducing this tax do not constitute any direct discrimination implements it, so it considered the special tax levied in Hungary to be compatible with the freedom of establishment.

According to the announcement, with the decision "the Brussels Commission has once again sided with the price-gouging and profit-seeking SPAR, which is trying to cover up its hunger for profit with a continuous fight against the Hungarian government, instead of the families". Whatever the EU bureaucracy does, the Hungarian government will remain adamant and will always stand by the reduction of prices and Hungarian families, adds the NGM.

The ministry's position remains unchanged: only businesses that, in addition to their law-abiding behavior, take into account the interests of Hungarian consumers, i.e. offer high-quality and affordable products for Hungarian families, can remain on the domestic market.

"For those who do not respect or have respected Hungarian consumers and overcharged, they have no place in the Hungarian economy. The government, as before and in the future, will act in the most decisive way with all its means against unjustified extra profits and unfair behavior that harms families," the ministry's announcement reads.
