The priority of the consecutive Hungarian presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) is to find harmony between competitiveness and climate protection and environmental protection goals, the Secretary of State responsible for the environment and circular economy of the Ministry of Energy (ME) stated in Luxembourg on Monday evening.

At the press conference held after the meeting of the Environmental Protection Council, Anikó Raisz emphasized that it is necessary to do something so that environmental protection, health and competitiveness aspects can be applied together in order for the European Union to be able to successfully implement the relevant policies.

According to his information, the most important thing at the council meeting was the formulation of the council's position on the United Nations climate change conference (COP29) planned in Azerbaijan in November.

In this regard, the State Secretary said: the EU will support an effective and achievable goal of financing the fight against climate change and will advocate for ambitious plans related to climate change.

According to the adopted text, the EU intends to continue to take a leading role in international efforts to limit global warming and calls for solidarity with the countries and communities most exposed to climate change.

The state secretary announced that the member states also held a discussion about the EU position planned to be represented at the 5th session of the intergovernmental negotiating committee (INC-5) to be held in South Korea at the end of November in order to adopt a legally binding international convention on plastic pollution.

"We cannot emphasize enough the importance of the convention to prevent plastic pollution," he said.

Regarding the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), scheduled to be held in Colombia between October 21 and November 1, the Secretary of State said: the council also accepted its mandate.

At last year's conference on biodiversity, states set the global goal that one third of the planet's area should be a natural environment. Hungary has fulfilled this commitment, one-third of its territory is in a state close to nature - highlighted Anikó Raisz, then added: now comes the period of implementation, accompanied by appropriate planning and review.

"All this is not only important from the point of view of competitiveness, economy, environmental protection, health and many other aspects, but also for us to live in a healthy environment," said the Secretary of State responsible for the environment and circular economy of the Ministry of Energy.
