The former One Direction member died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, local police said.
Liam Payne died on Wednesday, according to a police statement sent to CNN. According to the authorities, uniformed officers went to the hotel on Wednesday afternoon after receiving an emergency call about an aggressive man who was probably under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The police statement did not identify that person as Payne.
Payne was born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, the youngest of three children. He is best known as a member of the famous British boy band One Direction. The band, featuring Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, was formed in 2010 after each member appeared on the UK version of the reality show The X Factor.
One Direction announced in 2015 that they were going on hiatus. Payne later released his debut solo album LP1 in 2019. And in May 2023, he announced that he was working on a new album, which he was "very excited about," and shared that he was planning a tour.
He spoke openly about his previous struggles with drugs and about the fact that he finished rehab in the summer of 2023.
The tour was due to start in South America in September of that year, but Payne had to postpone the planned dates after contracting nephritis.
Liam Payne was 31 years old.
