The Gyurcsány party celebrated a birthday.
At the event held on the occasion of the 13th birthday of the Democratic Coalition, party leader Ferenc Gyurcsány spoke about the importance of storytelling, and that this role in Hungary's history should not be ceded to Fidesz, including Viktor Orbán. Referring to Péter Magyar Gyurcsány, he said that this should not be allowed even to those who previously wrote Orbán's story, and according to him, only the Democratic Coalition is the only authentic storyteller.
The Democratic Coalition will nominate candidates in all 106 constituencies in the spring of 2026, announced on October 19 at the party's 13th birthday event. The opposition politician also revealed that the candidates will be presented from November.
In his speech, the party chairman spoke mostly about the importance of storytelling, as he believed that in Hungary the politicians had left the telling of the country's history to Fidesz, but mostly to Viktor Orbán - he also explained the defeat of the six-party opposition coalition in the 2022 parliamentary elections.
"The common story [wasn't] that there are six short stories that we put together in one book"
- believes Gyurcsány, who believes that the real question, even then and now, is whether "the multitudes opposed to Orbán have their own common history".
The worst thing is that Orbán's own stories have become ingrained in the ears, souls, brains and hearts of those who are otherwise opposed to him, and they tell small or large pieces of this story as their own stories
- stated the party president, who finally ran his thoughts on the fact that those who do not have their own history lose.
For this reason, the former prime minister believes that the world facing Viktor Orbán does not currently have a common story, and without mentioning the names of Péter Magyar and the Tisza Party, he indicated that in his opinion there is only one authentic story and one authentic storyteller in Hungary, the Democratic Coalition, since Orbán Under Viktor's leadership, Hungary got lost in history, and the Orbán government got lost in governance.
It is impossible that the multitudes opposed to Orbán try to entrust the telling of their own story to those who wrote and directed Orbán's story yesterday
Gyurcsány pointed out clearly to Péter Magyar, who then spoke about the fact that the Democratic Coalition must renew itself and that this new DK will tell its own story without compromise. Then referring to the Tisza Party, he stated again that the DK does not want to be friends with those who do not want to be friends, that is, Gyurcsány stated that his party will not cooperate with the Tisza Party.
Then, speaking about the role of the DK, the party chairman said that he sees it as follows:
We are lions. Hunters should not tell our stories, even if they went to the costume rental shop and now want to dress up as lions for the upcoming carnival
- concluded Ferenc Gyurcsány, party chairman of the Democratic Coalition.
Wayfinding after the election
The Democratic Coalition won 8.03 percent of the votes in the June 9 European Parliament elections, which was equivalent to two mandates. In 2019, the party received 16.05 percent of the votes, which at the time meant four mandates for the DK.
For a long time after the 2019 elections, the DK was the strongest party in the opposition, to which politicians from several parties moved after the defeat in the 2022 parliamentary elections. For a long time, the strategy of the party led by Ferenc Gyurcsány was that the current EP election would be a watershed, after which the DK would face Fidesz-KDNP as a powerful challenger, however, with the appearance of Péter Magyar and the Tisza Party, the party's support decreased. Since then, the shadow government has been dissolved, and the DK TV YouTube channel intended for the DK TV channel has also been terminated.
Ferenc Gyurcsány previously interpreted the results of the European Parliament and local government elections held at the same time as not being the responsibility of the DK leadership, and announced a more militant policy in a more than forty-minute video.
