Based on the experience of the last US presidential election, many people already envisioned a civil war situation in the event of a possible Republican victory, few expected the "handover" to go so smoothly. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris admitted her electoral defeat and asked her supporters to accept the result in a speech at a Washington university.

The vice president appeared in public at Howard University in the capital, which traditionally educates African-American students, after speaking on the phone with his re-elected Republican opponent, Donald Trump.

On Tuesday evening, Kamala Harris held her event waiting for the election results on the grounds of the institution, which she did not participate in - knowing the results. In his speech the day after the defeat, he emphasized that he accepts the result and will certify it on January 6, but added that his loyalty is primarily to the American Constitution.

"While I acknowledge the outcome of the election, I will not abandon the fight that fueled this campaign":

with the fight for freedom, opportunities, fairness and the dignity of all people

- said the democratic politician who was defeated by Donald Trump.

Kamala Harris has confirmed that she will continue to stand by her political stance on gun control and abortion, saying "this is not the time to throw up our hands, this is the time to roll up our sleeves." Joe Biden listened to Kamala Harris's speech admitting election defeat from the White House, the presidential office announced.
After the vice president's speech, democratic lawmakers promised a peaceful transfer of power in a statement.

The document, signed by Senator Tammy Duckworth and her fellow politicians, states that despite the deep disappointment felt by the election results, she and her Democratic colleagues will do everything they can to ensure a peaceful transfer of power and fulfill their constitutional obligation to do so.

The Democratic president-elect had previously congratulated Donald Trump on his victory by phone and offered his help in carrying out a peaceful transfer of power. Kamala Harris addressed the young people separately, asking them not to be bitter about the defeat and to never give up the fight for their goals.

Harris discussed the importance of a peaceful transition of power with Trump, a senior associate of the vice president said.

"Trump thanked Vice President Harris for her determination, professionalism and tenacity throughout the campaign, and the two leaders agreed to unite the country"

Steven Cheung, spokesman for the Republican candidate, wrote in his statement.

President Joe Biden also congratulated Donald Trump and invited him to the White House, the presidential office said. The 81-year-old Democrat politician will deliver a "message to the nation" on Thursday to talk about the election results and the transition period, the White House added.

Trump secured victory in the swing states of North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin on Wednesday morning, followed later by his victory in the state of Michigan.
