The Commissioner's hearings in Brussels are beginning to resemble a political dog comedy, writes a representative of the European Parliament of Fidesz on social media.
The story starts from the fact that the European People's Party made a pact in advance with the left-wing parties. One element of this is that it was decided in advance that the Hungarian candidate Olivér Várhelyi would definitely not be allowed to pass in the first round. This happened anyway, as it became clear at the first evaluation meeting (held behind closed doors). I also participate in these.
The people's party-left representatives (obviously with the support of the Tisza Party) asked Olivér Várhelyi for additional answers in writing despite the fact that he gave one of the most convincing performances at his hearing, also demonstrating that he has been a member of the commissioners' college for a reason for 5 years.
The second closed-door assessment lasted no more than a quarter of an hour. It says everything about the whole thing that they did not deal with the answers sent by Olivér Várhelyi in any meaningful way, instead they announced as another pact decision that they would drag out the procedure further. There was supposed to be another meeting on Wednesday this week, but it was canceled without any substantial justification. Since then, I don't even know when the next one will be.
His dismissal from Várhely is not only an institutional but also an ideological blindness
But why?
The reasons are to be found in the fact that the events in Spain outgrew the original plans. The Spanish commissioner-designate is currently still a member of the Spanish government, and in his home country he is considered one of the main people responsible for the tragedy in Valencia and the lack of government assistance. In a political sense, they are demanding his head, and this makes it very difficult for the European Parliament to approve his membership in the European Commission. If they don't approve, the entire grand coalition pact will collapse.
Therefore, due to the difficult situation of the Spanish socialist commissioner candidate, the approval of the other commissioners is also blocked.
This is all about a lot of things, just not what it should be about. They deal with small-scale political deals without content, not with the fact that the European Commission can start its work as soon as possible in this crisis-ridden period. Thus, Oliver Várhelyi is not blocked because any of them would be interested in the situation of European healthcare.
To be continued next week. The whole process is as sad as it is undignified. It is unnecessary to describe what the much-quoted founding fathers of the EU would do if they saw this.
Be that as it may, Olivér Várhelyi is an excellent candidate, he proved himself during his audition, and he has proven himself in the last 5 years. We have supported it up until now, and we will continue to support it.
