It would be time for someone to signal to the party's brilliant, one-time and unrepeatable leader that elections are not decided on Facebook, nor in the witches' kitchen of left-liberal pollsters.

In addition to the Tisza Party, several opposition parties are standing at the starting line in the Tolna county electoral district, after the death of János Potápi Árpád, state secretary and member of parliament, on October 17, so by-elections will be necessary in Dombóvár and its surroundings.

After Potápi's death, the National Electoral Commission decided at its meeting on October 31 to call a by-election to be held in the individual constituency of Tolna County No. 2.

The dates are:

• The by-election will be held on January 12, 2025.

• The campaign period begins on November 23, 2024.

• The electoral office shall immediately, but no earlier than November 23, 2024, hand over to the applicant or to the voter intending to run as a candidate the quantity of recommendation forms requested.

• The candidate must be announced by 4:00 p.m. on December 6, 2024 at the latest.

János Árpád Potápi was unbeatable

Starting in 1998, Potápi was the Fidesz parliamentary representative in the county of Tolna for 26 years. Between 2002 and 2014, he also held the position of mayor of Bonyhád.

In 2022, the ruling party politician won over 60 percent of the vote and defeated the joint candidate of the six-party opposition:

• János Árpád Potápi (Fidesz-KDNP) – 62.44 percent

• Loránd Szabó (DK, Jobbik, Momentum, MSZP, LMP, Párbeszéd) – 27 percent

• Gábor Tobak (Mi Hazánk) – 7.54 percent

• Gábor Bea (Normalís Párt) – 1.54 percent

• Attila Kőmüves (Solution Movement) – 1.48 percent

János Árpád Potápi, in addition to his position as a representative, also performed the duties of state secretary responsible for national policy, his successor in this area will be Lőrinc Nacsa, KDNP politician.

Who can Fidesz nominate?

The governing parties have not yet announced who they will field in the Dombóvár-based by-election. According to unconfirmed press reports, Árpád Potápi's daughter, Kata Potápi, may be Fidesz's candidate, but Krisztina Csibi, the director of the House of Hungary, was also mentioned - she was considered Potápi's right-hand man.

The Tisza party skips the election

"The presidency of our party has decided that TISZA will not field a candidate either in the current or any future by-elections"

Péter Magyar announced on November 6.

Thick skin

Péter Magyar, in addition to his usual explanation dressed in attacks, even added to his decision that, in his opinion, Hungarians should not exercise their democratic rights:

"The TISZA party recommends to our compatriots from Tolna County not to take part in the interim election on January 12, thereby sending a message that they will not assist the power elite's 20-year show."

However, as Hungarian voters, as citizens, and as citizens responsible for the fate of our country, we encourage everyone to take part in all elections - there is democracy as long as we can vote, even if in this case it would bring embarrassing results for the Tisza Party.

There will be several opposition candidates

Three opposition parties have already announced that they will run in the Tolna by-elections:

• The Mi Hazánk Mozgalom is launching Dóra Dúró, a member of parliament and deputy president of the party.

• The MSZP will field its own candidate in the election, whose identity is still being negotiated.

• During the Second Reform, he nominates the party's communications director, Pál Ágoston.

In response to Index's question, Jobbik explained:

"After Jobbik achieved a very poor result in the EP elections and we learned the following lessons, our movement set about rebuilding its national organization with full steam, which we will complete by 2026 and will be ready to run in the parliamentary elections. However, in this organizational reconstruction, we are not yet at the point in Tolna constituency number 2 to nominate a local representative candidate to represent the locals, so as a responsible political organization, we have decided not to run in the by-election".

The Párbeszéd-Zöldek have also declared that they will not field a candidate in the Tolna by-elections, while the Democratic Coalition, Momentum and LMP are silent for the time being.
