Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said only what we want to hear: he considers it particularly important to preserve the status quo of the rights of the national communities living in Slovakia and he admitted that things had happened in the past in Hungarian-Slovak relations that he was not proud of.

On Monday, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico held talks with the president of the Hungarian Federation of Upland Hungarian Party, László Gubík, and his vice-president, Péter Őry, at the government office in Bratislava, the press department of the association and the government office announced.

"The main topic of our negotiation was the planned amendment of the State Language Act and the financing of local governments, where we also presented our amendment proposals and received a promise of further negotiations at the highest levels," they wrote on the Facebook profile of the Hungarian party in the highlands.

They added: the prime minister emphasized that

it considers the peaceful coexistence of Hungarians and Slovaks living in Slovakia to be vital for the stability of the country, and it considers the preservation of the status quo of the rights of the national communities living in Slovakia to be particularly important.

Fico calmed everyone down

They pointed out: the prime minister also assured the president and vice-president of the Hungarian Federation that his government would not allow amendments to the state language law that would tighten the legal regulations affecting the language use rights of national communities.

"The issue of Slovak-Hungarian coexistence is no longer a political topic in Slovakia that would be part of a pre-election campaign"

- declared Fico after the meeting, according to the press release of the government office in Bratislava.

In the announcement, Robert Fico also appreciated the fact that

There is a friendly and constructive dialogue between him and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

"As the prime minister of Slovakia, I am aware that we share common themes with the Hungarians living in Slovakia and the Hungarian political representation, such as sovereign foreign policy, the fight against illegal immigration and, above all, the issue of peace in Ukraine," the government office's press release quoted Fico as saying.

The Prime Minister underlined: he also informed the leaders of the Hungarian Association at the meeting that

it is also in his personal interest to preserve the status quo of the national minorities living in Slovakia.

László Gubík: There is still a long way to go, but we are on our way!

László Gubík, the President of the Hungarian Federation, shared some thoughts in his Facebook post after the instructive audience.

Robert Fico is the first of the Slovak party presidents to congratulate the new presidency of the Hungarian Federation. Thank you, Mr. President!

The Prime Minister noted that things happened in Hungarian-Slovak relations during his previous administrations, which he is not proud of . Depending on the citizenship case, this sentence had its own charm. We will continue from here.

I made it clear that the Hungarian Federation is not a government party, but it is not an opposition party either.

Expanding the rights and well-being of the Hungarians here is the first priority for us, and we are also committed supporters of Hungarian-Slovakian peaceful coexistence,

and we specifically support the effective cooperation of the two governments, which is also in the basic interest of the Hungarians in the highlands.

We agreed that the lack of standard parties makes the entire political system unstable, which is why Hungarian politicians are needed in national politics.

In connection with this, we opened up several topics, including developments in the language law.

His government does not allow any amendments that would restrict the use of languages by national communities. This is bad news for the Ministry of Culture, good for common sense!

The reason for today's meeting was the letter we sent in connection with the amendment of the local government financing system. In this matter , we were promised that from now on the Ministry of Finance will handle the issue at the appropriate level and with care.

There is also complete consensus that the world is being organized along new fault lines, therefore political communities based on common sense are to be respected , and he views Hungarians from the highlands as such.

There is still a long way to go, but we are on our way! - concluded the party president's post.
