Civilians on both sides will soon be able to safely return to their settlements.

A ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon's Shia militia Hezbollah came into effect at 4 a.m. local time on Wednesday after both sides accepted an agreement brokered by the United States and France. The agreement was announced by US President Joe Biden on Tuesday evening in the garden of the White House.
Biden called the ceasefire agreement, which was supposed to end more than a year of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, a brave one. At the same time, he said that all this means a new beginning for Lebanon.

The US President said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had informed him that the Israeli Security Cabinet had approved the agreement.

Calling the developments good news, Biden emphasized that the 60-day ceasefire agreement, if fully implemented, "is intended to serve as a lasting cessation of hostilities."

"Never again will they allow what remains of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations to threaten Israel's security"

- emphasized Biden.

He stated at the same time that

if Hezbollah were to violate the ceasefire and pose a threat to Israel, the Jewish state has the right to self-defense in accordance with international law.

Israel will gradually withdraw its troops from Lebanon during the 60-day period, and the Lebanese army will take control of the border areas, ensuring that Hezbollah cannot rebuild its infrastructure there, Biden underlined.

"Civilians on both sides will soon be able to safely return to their communities," the US president said.

Biden also urged a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. "Just like the Lebanese people, the people living in the Gaza Strip deserve prosperity and a secure future. The fighting is coming to an end for them too," he added.

Péter Szijjártó reacted to the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon

Unfortunately, the past little more than a year has again brought a series of tragic events to the region, but at the same time, this morning we finally received good news.

The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon allows displaced Israelis and Lebanese people to return home and live in peace.

"The most important task of the international community now is to guarantee that all parties respect the agreement, because this is in the interest of all people living in the region. A ceasefire, a ceasefire, the cessation of fighting is always good news," the minister pointed out.

Péter Szijjártó said:

we hope that the next such good news will come from our neighbor soon.
