At least the thieves didn't need Pom-pom.
The bronze statue that was inaugurated two years ago in memory of the Artist of the Nation, who died in 2020, has disappeared from the grave monument in the artist's plot of the Farkasrét cemetery: Attila Pintér's bronze sculptures depict Csukás' two legendary karaters, Pom Pom and Süsü. Two quotes from the poet and writer, who died in 2020, were also placed on the grave:
“I can't help being born and I can't help dying. I can do anything in between. This is my freedom, my inheritance, if you like.”
While the second quote gives an insight into his creed: "I have two wings: one is a poem, the other is a fairy tale, and I fly beautifully with them."
However, the other day, the work depicting Süsü disappeared from the tombstone in the artist's plot of the Farkasrét cemetery. Fidelio contacted Attila Pintér by phone, who learned about what happened from the journalist. As he said, he was devastated by the news.
What I feared came to pass, he said, referring to the fact that the statue was probably removed by unauthorized persons.
Based on the photos taken of the tomb, the sculptor pointed out that he believes he has discovered traces of engraving at one point. He said the statue was fixed at three points and attached to the grave with stone glue, so the perpetrators probably had to "work hard" to remove it. He added that since bronze is a soft material, he does not rule out that the monument could have been damaged.
The statue depicting Pom Pom remained apparently intact.
In 2007, the bronze statues that symbolized the comedian's life path also disappeared from Géza Hofi's grave in the Farkasrét cemetery: the boots, cloak and laurel wreath. The monument - created by the stone sculptor István Fáskerti and the foundry master Vilmos Mihály Kunos based on the plans of the Munkácsy Prize-winning sculptor Tamás Asszonyi - was replaced with stone elements after the vandalism.
