Hungarian-American political relations are approaching a golden age, with the election of Donald Trump as president, relations between Hungary and the United States can be better than ever before, stated Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó in Budapest on Tuesday.
According to the ministry's announcement sent to MTI, the head of the department, in response to a journalist's question about his trip to the US the previous day, reported at a press conference held with his colleague from Georgia that they had a long, approximately three-hour meeting with President-elect Donald Trump, as well as appointed national security adviser Mike Waltz and the with Elon Musk appointed to lead the new ministry responsible for government efficiency.
"Of course, we congratulated the president-elect, as this was the first personal meeting between the prime minister and the president since the election," he said.
"The prime minister and the president-elect were in constant contact even when Donald Trump was not president, even during the election campaign, and they have spoken to each other on the phone several times since then. So that there is consultation between them and that it is regular is completely natural," he added.
He emphasized that the importance of the meeting was also increased by the fact that, as one of the main effects of the transformation of the world economy, digitalization and artificial intelligence can play a decisive role in the future in which country will have what place in the world economy. However, according to his words, Elon Musk and the corporate empire connected to him have and will continue to play a major role in the spread of these new technologies.
Péter Szijjártó then stated that now there is a chance to establish better political relations between Hungary and the United States than ever before.
"If you are interested in the lessons of this conversation, (...) then I can tell you that the Hungarian-American political system is facing a golden age," he said.
"I think (...) that it was not by chance that the pro-peace forces of the world were happy that President Donald Trump won this election, it was not by chance that those who are pushing for peace in Ukraine were happy," he underlined.
Finally, the minister called it important that until January 20, 2025, no one in the United States or Europe makes an irresponsible decision that could start irreversible processes that make peacemaking impossible.
At the same time, he believed that since the war was still going on, the efforts of the Hungarian peace mission should be stepped up.
"Last week, the Prime Minister was with the Holy Father. I was in Moscow and I was in Washington, we also held meetings in Malta. We just visited Florida with the Prime Minister, and there will be another event this week, at least two, which will be part of the Hungarian peace mission, one tomorrow and one the day after tomorrow," he informed.
