The goal: to avoid shortages.
German households and businesses must conserve gas to avoid gas shortages, the country's energy regulator, the Federal Network Agency, has asked, Tagesschau reported.
According to the agency's analysis, the country has so far consumed significantly more gas in this year's heating season than last year.
According to the data, the total gas consumption in Germany between October and December 2024 was 5.8 percent higher compared to the same period of the previous year. A 9.1 percent increase in consumption compared to 2023 was registered in industry, while the increase in households and businesses was more modest, at 1.9 percent.
The agency attributed the spike in gas consumption to the colder weather. However, Klaus Müller, the head of the agency, said that considering the trend
consumers should use gas more sparingly,
to avoid shortages. According to Müller, however, the country's gas supply is not yet in danger, as the storage tanks are still 80 percent full.
When it comes to heating, natural gas is still the most important energy source in Germany: around half of the apartments and family houses throughout the country are heated with gas.
