Poland reached a level of diplomatic scandal-making. According to Péter Szijjártó, Warsaw's behavior is "pathetic and childish".
The presence of the Hungarian ambassador in Warsaw at the opening of the Polish presidency in the Council of the European Union is not desirable because of the right of asylum granted to Marcin Romanowski in Hungary, Polish Deputy Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka stated on TVP Info on Friday.
Just last week, Sobkowiak-Czarnecka talked about: EU member states, including Hungary, will be represented at the ambassadorial level at Friday's festive opening.
On Friday, however, the deputy minister announced that the entire diplomatic corps had been invited to the opening, while Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski indicated in a diplomatic note addressed to the Hungarian ambassador in Warsaw that the head of mission "is not welcome in the theater".
"That's why we're waiting to see if any of the lower-ranking representatives of the embassy will show up," Sobkowiak-Czarnecka noted.
The move is a consequence of Hungary granting political asylum to Marcin Romanowski, a Polish opposition representative and former deputy justice minister.

In connection with what happened, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade presented the position of Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, according to which
"in relation to the decision of the Polish foreign minister-colleague, two terms are competing: pathetic and childish".
Poland formally took over the presidency of the EU on January 1. Antónia Costa, President of the European Council, will take part in the opening ceremony to be held on Friday evening at the National Theater in Warsaw.
