Liberal Polish activists are asking people to declare themselves Roman Catholic during the upcoming census at most if they really are, reports Mandiner. In the previous census, a decade ago, 96 percent of respondents claimed to be Roman Catholic.

According to the activists, however, this number is false, because many people automatically checked the box next to the Roman Catholic religion, and some of the young people did not fill out the questionnaire themselves, but rather their parents.

"The census from ten years ago paints a very homogenous Poland, even though a lot of people in the country do not go to church," said the head of the campaign, Oskar Zyndol.

Activists have also launched a social media campaign called "I want to count" to encourage the Polish population to identify themselves as "only" Christian, atheist or deist, for example. The campaign is also supported by the organization that is one of the main players in the protests that erupted in connection with the tightening of abortion.
