New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard could become the first transgender athlete to compete in the Olympics.
With her ranking in the world rankings, Hubbard is entitled to compete in her category, the women's plus 87 kilograms, at the age of 43 at the pentathlon games in Tokyo, postponed from last year to the summer of this year.
The athlete went by the name Gavin a decade ago and was considered one of the leading male weightlifters in his country,
although he had little international success.
She retired at the age of thirty-five and started working for the local association, then decided to change her gender and got a new name: she returned to the sport as Laurel, but already in the women's weightlifting field.
He won the silver medal at the 2017 World Championships, then won the Pacific Games, and finished sixth at the last World Cup in 2019.
