István Csomortányi and János Mezei, the co-presidents of the Transylvanian Hungarian Association, published an open letter after Hungary's left-liberal Momentum announced that it would field a Székely candidate in next year's elections.

We quote some thoughts from the letter, which can be read in full on the Erdély Ma website.

In the past few days, we learned that your party intends to field a Transylvanian Hungarian during the upcoming parliamentary elections in Hungary in order to properly represent us, Transylvanian Hungarians, in the Parliament if he wins a mandate.

  1.     Transylvanian and Carpathian Hungarians currently have an adequate and overwhelming representation in the Hungarian Parliament. If you do not perceive this, the sole reason for this may be that they do not maintain any relationship with the Hungarians who broke off outside the borders, they did not even strive to establish it, and they did not take part in the nation-building work of the past years.
  2.    We observe their change of heart with sincere astonishment , and the fact that, as the Hungarian parliamentary elections approach, they seem to be more and more concerned with the fate of the Transylvanian Hungarians. We respectfully ask: where was the fearful concern you felt for us when, during the last two elections in Romania – which were crucial for the future of Transylvanian Hungarians – they urged Transylvanian Hungarians to vote for Romanian parties?
  3. We cannot ignore the important fact that you are now preparing to represent the Transylvanian Hungarians by joining forces with all those political forces that have done nothing but incite against us, the Transylvanian Hungarians and the Hungarians across the border in the past decades.
  4. And finally: if they were really serious about the representation of Transylvanian and Hungarians beyond the border, they would not play along with false advocates who want to wipe out the nations, who are working to create the United States of Europe, but who are completely insensitive to the rights of the indigenous national communities of Europe.

In light of the above, in short , if we may ask, you should not represent us!
