The Indian mutation of the coronavirus was also identified in Hungary, the national chief medical officer announced at the online press conference of the operative group responsible for the prevention of the epidemic on Friday.

Cecília Müller said that one of the two patients has already recovered from the infection, her illness passed easily, while the other patient is in the hospital, but does not need ventilation. He added that none of them had been abroad, and the epidemiological investigation did not reveal the source of the infection. He indicated that more and more professional announcements and publications are appearing that the currently used vaccines are effective against the Indian mutation of the virus. Sooner or later, the Indian mutant will appear in more and more countries, he said, adding that it is therefore important that everyone protects themselves against infection.

The specialist pointed out that thanks to vaccinations and epidemiological measures, the epidemic is still at a low level, last week 39 percent fewer new infections were registered than the previous week.

Presenting the data of the 20th week, Cecília Müller said that 21 percent of the registered new infections were from the 40-49 age group, 19 percent from the 30-39 age group, 15 percent from the 50-59 age group, and 13 percent from the 20-29 age group. The average age of the infected is 42 years. He noted that a significant proportion of those infected are among those of active working age, therefore he asked those belonging to this age group to get vaccinated in order to protect themselves and their families.

Looking at the territorial distribution, 14 percent of the registered cases in the 20th week were in the capital, 13 percent in Pest County, and 9 percent in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. The fewest infected were registered in Nógrád, Somogy and Tolna counties (2-2-2 percent). Within the national average of 39 percent, the decrease in the number of cases was the largest in Somogy and Csongrád-Csanád counties (57 and 53 percent, respectively), while the number of new cases in Vas county increased by 9 percent in the 20th week.

Cecília Müller mentioned: it is still true that the significant majority of newly infected people had some other chronic disease along with the infection, and only five percent of them were not found to have any other health problems. He added: the concentration of the genetic material of the coronavirus measured in wastewater also drops significantly.

The Chief Medical Officer explained that by Friday, 448 new infected people had been registered, 28 had died, while 999 patients were being cared for in hospitals without ventilation and 121 were still on ventilators. Cecília Müller also touched on the fact that the test results of the Sinopharm vaccine were published in an American scientific journal, according to which the effectiveness of the Chinese vaccine is 73-78 percent.

Police lieutenant colonel Róbert Kiss, the deputy head of the operational staff's duty center, announced that the operative staff will hold a press conference next Tuesday.
