As a result of the gradual easing of border controls introduced due to the coronavirus epidemic, the number of illegal migrants arriving in the European Union is increasing, according to data from the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). Based on statistics published by Politico in Brussels , more than 42,700 illegal border crossings were registered from January to May this year, a third higher than the number recorded in the same period last year.
14,700 migrants arrived on the route established in the central basin of the Mediterranean Sea, mainly 13,300 illegal immigrants were registered in the Western Balkans, which represents an 85 percent increase compared to 2020 data. This year, 4,700 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain, by 90 percent.
